Facebook and Cambridge Analytica -Data Misuse



A political data firm Cambridge Analytica, gained access to 50 million Facebook users who converted this highly calibrated information into personal behavior analytics which further converted to personalized digital campaigns to influence American voters.  ref


The data is accessed through a legitimate offering of the app called “thisisyourdigitallife“which is based on psychometric fundamentals with user identities, friend networks, likes etc valuable information’s.

Why Critical:

Cambridge Analytica is a political data firm hired by President Trump’s 2016 election campaign. Which is allegedly linked to influence the voter decision through targeted digital ads campaigns


Company Response:

Facebook issued a statement on 16th March 2018, when they realized Dr. Aleksandr Kogan, a Russian-American psychology professor at the Cambridge university’s research had been turned over to Cambridge Analytica, a third party. It removed Dr. Kogan’s app from the site and demanded a certification that data has been destroyed.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his FB page “We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it. “
